Local Group Of Women Help Luderitz Get Back In Touch With Mother Nature
Several months ago two women were visiting a friend in hospital when they happened to glance out of the window; instead of being greeted by the pleasing sight of trees and gardens, the friends saw the quad filled with gravel and litter; hardly a pleasant atmosphere for the patients of the hospital. Perturbed, the two women later told their friends what they had seen and quickly resolved to do something about it.A few days later the group of nine women had developed a plan to create a whole new set of gardens around the hospital and thus ‘Women on a Mission’ was born.
Made up of nine members of the Lüderitz community the all-women organisation plans to landscape the area surrounding Lüderitz hospital which will include planting trees and flowers as well as acquiring benches and bird feeders, allowing patients to sit and watch the wildlife. The group has designed three separate gardens and, thanks to a lucrative lobster stall at this years Crayfish Festival, has already managed to purchase some of the plants needed.
Women on a Mission is also planning to do further fundraising by holding a beauty contest for hospital staff. However, it is unlikely that these two events will raise enough money to cover the full cost of the development and the group are welcoming all donations, both of raw materials, such as sand and wood, and of money.
In the future Women on a Mission hopes to complete one project every year and has already started discussing the idea of developing the garden in front of the Magistrates Office, but for the time being watch out for the horticultural do-gooders as they go about their work at the hospital.
