The Future’s Bright
From 17th- 19th June the Karas Regional Career Exhibition took place at the Suiderlig High School in Keetmanshoop in order to encourage learners to begin thinking about their futures.
The exhibition was officially opened on Wednesday, 17 June, and began with an introduction from Reverend Jan Scholtz and welcoming remarks by Mrs. C. Mostert (Deputy Director of Education – Keetmanshoop) on behalf of the Honorable Governor, David Boois (Karas Region). Following this, Mr. Kazuapua (Head of Desk of the National Youth Council) gave a message of motivation on behalf of Mr. M. Kapere (Acting Secretary General of the National Youth Council). Finally, the event was officially launched by Hon. Hilma Nikanor (Councilor for Keetmanshoop – Urban Constituency) on behalf of the Honourable Minister W. Konjore (Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport, and Culture). All of the speakers emphasized that the learners and out-of-school youth must make the right career choices and make use of the opportunities that exist for them. In order to reach their full potential, the learners must refrain from alcohol and drugs and work and study hard.
This event allowed grade 10 -12 learners from Keetmanshoop, Luderitz, Karasburg, and other surrounding schools to view the employment opportunities offered by the 13 companies and institutions in attendance (e.g. NamPort, Skorpion Zinc, NamFi, UNam, Polytech, Telecom, Financial Assistance Education, and so on). The purpose of the exhibition was to offer the students and out of school youth in Karas an opportunity to learn early on what is available to them for future employment, the values of education in preparing for their employment future, and how to begin preparing themselves to reach their employment goals. Furthermore, it served as an opportunity for the Karas youth to come together and share their thoughts on the future.
This was the 9th Career Exhibition that the Ministry of Youth has organized but it was the first attempt to make it regional as it had been solely in Luderitz in the past years. The event was a great success and the Ministry hopes to expand upon it in the future.
