Classes Offered At Youth Centre
Luderitz Youth Centre has started 2010 on a high note with lots of new classes and activities taking place, many of which are already filled with Luderitz residents who are looking to further their studies or enjoy some recreational activities. Registration for this quarters computer classes (January – April). Those who were not fortunate enough to arrive in time
were put on a waiting list for the next intake. The courses will run
for 10 weeks and cover basic computer usage, typing, Microsoft Word,
Microsoft Excel, and basic Internet and email use. There are 4
sessions a day capped at 10 people per session (or 40 students total),
the times offered are as follows: 09h00 – 10h30, 11h00 – 12h30, 14h00
- 15h30, 17h30 – 19h00, Monday through Thursday. Fridays are an open
lab when students may come and seek extra instruction. The next intake
will be coming up in April, and the courses will run until June. After
that, courses will run from July to September, and finally from
September to December. The 10 week course costs N$60 to register, followed by an additional
N$100 at the beginning of each month. All fees must be paid in order
to receive a certificate.
The tailoring class also started on a high note. All 20 spots for the
January to June course were filled immediately. Those that did not
apply in time were offered a spot in the next tailoring class, running
from July to December. The course covers how to read and draw
patterns, designing, cutting, making, and trimming of ladies dresses,
sewing of men’s trousers and shirts, and the design and making of
children’s clothing (including school uniforms). Registration for the
tailoring class is N$100, followed by a monthly fee of N$50 (totalling
N$300). Classes are held from 09h00 to 14h00, Monday through Friday.
Ms. Chika’s Art Classes have also begun. New learners, ages 6 and up
are welcome to join! Additionally, a class for adults is held every
Friday. Classes began on Monday, January 18th and run to Friday, April
23rd and are held from 14h00 to 16h00 every day, Monday to Friday.
Drawing, painting, paper work, clay work, design, calligraphy, and
constructing book makers are all covered over the course of the
lessons. The class costs only N$10, and materials are provided free of

There are several additional community enrichment programs currently
running through the centre that are facilitated by outside members of
the community.
Ballet is held Monday from 14h00 – 17h30, 17h30 – 18h30, Wednesday
from 17h30 – 18h30, and Thursday from 15h00 – 17h00, and 17h30 -
18h30.
Music Lessons for Block Flute, provided to children aged 6 – 10, are
offered Monday – Thursday 17h00 – 18h00.
English Literacy Classes, offered by the editors of the Buchter News,
are offered Tuesday and Wednesday from 18h00 – 19h00.
