Update On The Old Power Station

During 2009 the Cabinet of the Namibian Government approved in principle the proposals submitted by the LWDC for Phase 2 and also pledged the support of the various Ministries and Government agencies to facilitate development.

At the same time a decision has been taken to include the Old Power Station as part of Phase 2 Development in order to speed up the renovation of this building which for many years has been stood derelict and for which no money could be forthcoming by the Lüderitz Town Council.

Phase 2 of the Lüderitz Waterfront Development Company now consists of four separate components which may or may not be developed at the same time depending on demand, ie:

(a) The Old Power Station = Multi Purpose Centre

(b) Retail Outlet

(c) Residential Component

(d)Hotel Development.

OLD POWER STATION:

Due to the fact that the Cabinet Resolution committed the Ministries to support the development, the Board approached the Ministry of Education who in turn supported the notion of tertiary education in the Karas Region.

The Polytechnic of Namibia was approached and it is now unanimously agreed that a Satellite Campus will be included in the Old Power Station building together with other facilities.

Facilities for sport were proposed and the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture will be requested to support this initiative.

The complex will include the following:

Polytechnic of Namibia – Lecture rooms, Laboratories, Multi Media Labs, Resource Centre / Library, Admin, Multi Purpose Hall, Hotel School.

Sports facilities: These will be a mixture of indoor and outdoor facilities.
Volleyball, Basketball, Squash, Gym(NamDeb), Swimming pool, Kite Surfing, Beach Volleyball, Beach Soccer.

Fire Station.

Maritime Museum

Public amenities: Amphitheatre, Craft Market, Youth Café, Ladies Bar, Facilities for Concerts.

Future expansion of the Polytechnic of Namibia is included in the master planning.

Final planning and cost estimates will be completed soon in order to prepare the necessary budgeting by the various Ministries.
