LWDC Announce Festival a Success
To conclude the Crayfish Festival we interviewed Mr Fluksman Samuehl, chairman of the LWDC, to find out his views on the weekend.
Mr Samuehl said the festival was mainly a success as there was an increased number of SMEs and exhibitions, a lot more seafood available and a very festive atmosphere. He believes the future lies in revitalisation so that people keep on visiting the town, this will increase the potential for widening the tourism market and make the festival more and more successful each year.
Mr. Samuehl stated ‘the years to come will bring challenges in terms of facilities; people in the town demand services during the Crayfish Festival and they’re not available, special arrangements could have been made for this one weekend like gas stations and shops opening longer’. He also believes the success can be measured by how many first time visitors came to Luderitz and enjoyed the event, he thinks they will visit again and potentially bring their friends.
There were however some disappointments during the festival, President Pohamba and other dignitaries were expected to be present at the Gala Dinner and didn’t show, and unfortunately the rally at the sports stadium went on longer than expected so prevented President Pohamba from being at the official opening and crayfish demonstration at harbour square on Saturday 1st.
Many people were disappointed that Gazza did not perform in Luderitz on the Saturday evening. Mr Samuehl explained ‘Gazza was invited to China with former President Sam Nujoma so could not come to Luderitz’. Ticket sales for the concert were lower than expected and Mr Samuehl thinks this is because of the high lying land around the sports stadium which allows people to see the show without paying, as well as the low walls and fences which can be easily climbed. The renovation of the old power station will solve this problem, with its own concert area which will be a lot easier to secure.
Overall Mr Samuehl was happy with the way the Crayfish Festival went and has high hopes for future festivals, he believes they’ll just keep getting bigger and better and the town will benefit more each year.•
