World Cup Fever

As I’m sure everyone in Luderitz is aware, the 2010 FIFA World Cup kicked of this month in South Africa. The world cup is the most widely viewed sporting event in the world, and although Namibia unfortunately didn’t qualify, Namibians all over the country seem to be supporting South Africa proudly.
On the opening day, Friday June 11th there was a small procession through town organised and sponsored by FNB, of children and local bank staff adorned in football shirts and face paints, waving flags and sounding vuvuzelas. Businesses in town have also got into the spirit, many bringing in large TVs especially for the matches; the Nest Hotel, the Oyster Bar and Stepps Inn are amongst a few that are showing all the games on wide screen TVs.
The police are also taking special precautions during this time to quell any trouble that might arise from overzealous fans.•
