Luderitz Waterfront News
Dear Fellow Buchter
I sincerely hope that your curiosity and excitement about the developments at the Lüderitz Waterfront and the Old Power Station are as much a reality as mine.
A lot has happened over the last couple of months and as things are picking up speed, the commencement of construction is getting closer all the time.
The Old Power Station is going to be the new centre of learning and recreation for the youth.
The Polytechnic of Namibia is proposing to have a satellite campus situated at the Old Power Station. This will mean that young people, and for that matter older people as well, who want to further their studies, do not have to leave town to do so. Courses will be handled by the Polytechnic as if you where in Windhoek on campus. There will also be a hotel school, so aspirant chefs can do their courses here instead of having to wait for a place at the school in Windhoek.
The Ministry of Sport is going to facilitate several sport initiatives, one of which will be an indoor swimming pool.
The youth of the town will also be accommodated with beach volleyball and soccer as well as a skate park.
The Maritime Museum will be operated under the auspices of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources. This will be a big attraction for tourists from all over the world, but will also serve as an education centre for children.
The Fire Station will still be housed in the Old Power Station, but in splendor with a show case for some of the vintage fire trucks.
Budgets have been proposed and all going well, construction at the Old Power Station should start mid 2011.
Then of course there is the 2nd Phase of the Waterfront Development. To tell you the truth, I cannot wait for it to be a reality – it is going to be spectacular and will definitely have a positive input in Lüderitz with regard to tourism and economy.
The development is split into 3 sections: retail, housing and the hotel.
The retail section will comprise a shopping mall – a first for the south of Namibia. Negotiations have been positive and construction should start mid 2011 to be finished before Christmas 2012.
Market research is still being done to establish the viability of the housing and hotel sections. It will be part of the development, but the quantity of units and rooms/beds must still be determined.
Once all of this construction is completed, the seafront from the Nest Hotel up to CTF will be a walkway for tourists and locals to enjoy the beauty of the sea and the town.
The development will be so much more than what I have described here. Words cannot actually do the vision justice.
Should you have any queries or input, please do not hesitate to contact us at the Lüderitz Waterfront office as our door is always open and we would love to chat with you.
Regards.
The Lüderitz Waterfront Team.•
