Swallows Just Lose Out
An exciting rugby match between Rosh Pinah and Luderitz Ocean Swallows kicked off at 2.40pm on Saturday 22nd May at Luderitz sports stadium. Ocean Swallows seemed less prepared than Rosh Pinah before kickoff but it was soon obvious that the teams were well matched.
The game was fast paced which was no mean feat in the East weather, and Ocean Swallows did well to dominate in the scrums and line outs, but Rosh Pinah had some big forwards who repeatedly broke through Ocean Swallows defence. The Luderitz team did not however back down, even though Rosh Pinah was winning at this stage after scoring two well placed tries and one conversion straight through the middle of the posts. Ocean Swallows’ centre had a few good break throughs but without his team there to support him, he unfortunately didn’t score any points, until thirty minutes in when the centre finally made it over the oppositions try line. He also converted the try, bringing the score to 12-7 to Rosh Pinah at half time.
After a disheartening first half Ocean Swallows came back fighting after half time, unfortunately to no avail as Rosh Pinah scored three more tries. A lot of penalties were given away by both teams, mainly for all the injuries that occurred, one player from Rosh Pinah incurred a leg injury and two players from Ocean Swallows gained similar injuries.
The majority of the second half was spent with Swallows dominating in Rosh Pinah’s half but Rosh Pinah repeatedly had lucky, but well worked for break through runs which resulted in them scoring.
Luderitz rugby supporters gathered in the stadium and in their cars, well prepared for the hot day, beer and braai food was also available for the spectators, who were as ever enthusiastic about the game. Unfortunately this time Rosh Pinah came away with the victory but it was still an entertaining game and both teams worked hard.•
