A Positive Step for the Orphans of Luderitz
The Empowerment Centre for Vulnerable Children is a faith based and non-profit organisation that has been making a huge impact on the children of Luderitz.
The organisation was registered in 2009. Current activities take place twice a week. During these days they give lessons, spreading hope to orphans, vulnerable children (OVC’s) and young people living with HIV/AIDS. These lessons encourage OVC’s to obey their parents and to love and respect their neighbours. The emphasis of the teaching promotes abstinence from premarital sex, alcohol and drug use in order to avoid the spread of AIDS. Meals are provided so that children under treatment can eat before taking medicine.
Tony Mbundu, the Chairperson for ECVC, is seeking sponsors to help improve the current building in Benguela where they are based. He said: “When I came in Luderitz in 2008, every time I went into town I could see many children carrying empty bottles to sell them, begging at the shops in order to get something to eat while other children were at school.â€
ECVC’s main aims include paying OVC’s school fees, buying school uniforms, toiletries and nutrition as well as providing spiritual and moral support. They believe that by concentrating on a small amount of OVC’s they can make a bigger impact on individuals – which eventually benefits the entire community. ECVC hope to expand to places outside Luderitz to provide more OVC’s with food, clothing and shelter. Making their voices heard and respected will help guide them towards a self-sustainable future.
