On to the Next Generation…
The 17th January 2011 will be marked on the calendar as a date of great importance to the town of Luderitz. It was seen as an event that will go down in history when Mr. Miguel Angel Tordesillas Herranz was appointed the New Honorary Consul of Spain for the Karas region at the NovaNam crèche and community centre.
The ceremony was formal with most attendees looking smart for the special occasion, wearing red and yellow flowers and smiles all around. Children from the NovaNam crèche formed a choir to welcome guests which was enjoyed by all.
The first speaker was the Spanish Ambassador who spoke highly of Mr. Miguel Angel Tordesillas Herranz, his intellect, hard work and dedication. Attendees could see his joy in handing over the medal to the new Honorary Consul who accepted with a friendly handshake and began his speech: “I am very pleased and humble” and went on to talk of interesting, historical moments in the past comparing them to “a day like today.” Inspirational words about the importance of service finished off a wonderful speech by saying that people are never remembered for what they do for themselves but that they should be.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs then stepped forward and took the spotlight with a friendly but professional attitude. He called the event a historical moment but also a personal moment between father and son. Many thanks were given to the Spanish government and he ended his talk with a brilliant statement: “This is a great vision of the Karas region.”
On this same day, the official opening of the NovaNam net store took place. The Minister of Fisheries explained how companies could work together to make their dreams become reality. He praised NovaNam’s contribution to the economy and their corporate management skills. The net project itself was completed in late 2010 and more than N$7,000,000 was spent on it. This is forecast to be paid off in approximately 3 years.
NovaNam invested in Luderitz when no economic growth was taking place and was in fact deflating. The economy was turned around and we have Mr. Miguel Angel Tordesillas Herranz to thank for this vast improvement. The change meant that it became more industrial, increased tourism and “put it on the map.” Luderitz is how we see it today. •
