DIAZ CELEBRATES IN STYLE
Independence Day was celebrated in style this year by Diaz Primary School. On the 18th March the sun was shining and the mood was jubilant as students and staff gathered in the playground to watch colourful performances of Namibian song and dance marking the forthcoming Independence day.
The morning began with an eloquent welcoming speech by Nakwila Ipinge (grade 4) and the National Anthem which was sung proudly by all attending. Dance highlights of the day included a traditional Nama dance led by Swartbooi McDonald (grade 5) and Naomi Sauls (grade 6) and a vibrant dance performed by grade 6 and 7 girls wearing bright yellow skirts. The dance was a perfect synchronisation of stamping feet, bongos and song.
Students from grade 6 and 7 performed an energetic role play to tell the story of Independence. The struggle for freedom was well portrayed and enjoyed by the audience who waved handmade Namibian flags.
Diaz school mark Independence each year with similar celebrations and performances. The purpose of the day is to educate the learners about the struggle for Independence and remember the suffering of their ancestors. The performances this year were greatly enjoyed by all and Miss S. Izaks who organised the day said she was pleased with how the event had gone and believes “it is important for our learners not to forget their colourful past”•
