HOW IS THE WEATHER TODAY?

Weather – is a topic of conversation that passes most people’s lips on a daily basis worldwide, but recently here in Luderitz it’s all we can talk about.

Sitting on my balcony with severe Writer’s Block, I was soaking up the Eastern weather that is most rare for this corner of the world we call Luderitz. Yet just weeks ago the town was hit with a huge storm that caught people off guard. Thunder, lightning and flooding that almost washed away the town now seems like a dream with hot days, warm nights and a gentle breeze. I wonder how long this will last.

Back home in England, we have the four seasons – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Spring – which is the current seasons in the UK is when the flowers come out, the trees blossom and the warm weather slowly begins. However, it is also host to the infamous April Showers, yet this year I was told was non-existent and the weather was beautiful. When I told people at home it was cold and windy here, they exclaimed: “But you’re in Africa!”

The Winter here compared to the UK is most different. We get the dreaded cold gales, blowing freezing cold rain or we get calm days with frost/snow where you can see your every breath yet the sun is still shining. Here, it is totally unpredictable. Either the wind blows hot or the wind blows cold – depending on how it feels. What I have experienced so far in Luderitz Winter is mist and waking up shivering cold yet also blue skies and waking up boiling hot. It is totally bamboozling.

How can we get our head around some countries
on this weird and wonderful planet being completely flooded whilst others can be blessed with sun and clear skies? We can’t. It is no wonder we talk about the weather so much as it is constantly changing. I am excited to see what is in store for Luderitz next.
