After Vicky Marshall died of LUPUS, there were many requests for information about the disease. I shall therefore not be discussing Cancers this month. I hope you will begin to understand how much Vicky Marshall suffered:

Nadat Vickey Marshall aan Lupus oorlede is, was daar baie navraag oor die siekte. Daarom skryf ek nie hierdie maand oor kanker nie. Hopelik verstaan die mense hoekom Vicky Marshall so swaar gekry het:

SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS is a chronic (persistent) disease that causes inflammation in various parts of the body. It is commonly just called SLE or Lupus.

SLE affects about 3 in 10 000 people in the UK. It is an auto-immune disease which means the immune system (which normally protects the body from infections) mistakenly attacks itself. In HIV or AIDS the immune system is under-active, in Lupus, it is over-active.

Most people with SLE lead active normal lives, but for others SLE is severe and
life- threatening.

Mild SLE – Joint inflammation and/or skin rash or sores with tiredness.
Moderate SLE – This includes some inflammation of other organs of the body apart from joints and skin. (Internal organs, blood disorders, osteoporosis, eye diseases and oral diseases)
Severe SLE – Severe inflammation develops which can cause damage to organs such as the heart, lung, brain or kidneys.

LUPUS VICTIMS SHOULD AVOID:
• Ultraviolet rays from the sun
• Ultraviolet rays from fluorescentlightbulbs
• Infection
• A cold or a viral illness
• Exhaustion
• Injuries
• Emotional stress
• Stress to the body such as surgery etc
• Being pregnant
• Giving birth
• Certain drugs taken to treat an illness
• Certain contraceptive pills

If your symptoms suggest SLE , your doctor will usually do some blood tests, and if necessary, the function of the heart, kidneys, and other organs.

Take care.
