Lüderitz Speed Challenge arrives with high winds!
When the wind is good enough, people from all over the world come to Lüderitz for the Speed Challenge! This international event is really important to everyone who loves Kite Surfing as the world’s best Kitesurfers will be here in Luderitz. This year the Speed Challenge will take place from 20 October to 17 November.
This is the fifth time the Speed Challenge will take place in Lüderitz. For over 30 years sailors had been trying to reach the illusive 50 knot speed (round 90 km per hour) and in 2009 the barrier of 50 knots was reached for the first time here in Luderitz. In 2008 the kitesurf had become the fastest sailing vessel in the world. Now the kitesurfers are going faster and faster so there has to be an innovation on the 500 meter run the kitesurfers will take. Luderitz Speed Challenge is on the way to the 60 knots!
This year the organisers Sébastien Cattelan and Sophie Routaboul will not be having the Speed Challenge along the shore anymore but about 300m south of shore-line, at the ‘Second-Lagoon’. They want to dig a channel across the salt pann to cope better with the tide issue and create better starting and finishing area’s. Let’s see if the channel is good enough to set a new record!
The Ministery of Enviroment and Tourism gave permission to dig the channel, so depending on the wind the results will be improved, records will be beaten and there will be a lot of fun.
Now let us see who is the fastest kitesurfer this year!
