Two Peace Corps volunteers say goodbye!
A couple of Peace Corps volunteers working in Lüderitz are, after two years saying goodbye. Kevin Cussen and Brad Rollans loved their time in Lüderitz, but it’s time to go home now to family and friends.
Brad was involved with Peace Corps in 2007. In 2009 he came to LĂĽderitz to work at the Diaz School teaching English and IT to younger children. He really liked LĂĽderitz. It became a home to him and he feels there is no place like LĂĽderitz. He will miss the children from the school and all the people in LĂĽderitz who made his stay so special. He found the community here strong and he liked being part of it. The environment is another thing he will miss. Nowhere else has wind like this and it is a special place by the sea. It is very different from his home and he is definitely going to miss it. But there is also a good side of leaving. He is looking forward to seeing his family and spending some quality time with them.
The next stage for Brad is to hopefully work internationally as he likes travelling around. So after Lüderitz, he will go to other places and see what’s there. This is one of the reasons he got involved with Peace Corps. He had travelled to Spain and would like to see more of the world, but he also wanted to work. Peace Corps was a good opportunity.
Kevin the other Peace Corps volunteer who is leaving. With his orange coloured hair you could see him everywhere. He teaches IT classes at the Youth Centre. An opportunity for people to learn to work with Word, Excel and on the internet. It’s important to know how to work on a computer. Before he came to Lüderitz, he had finished a programming degree in computer science but he was bored with sitting at a desk all day so this was a great opportunity for him to do the things he is good at and to get experience. He will miss Lüderitz a lot. Especially the strong sense of community and the great friendships he has made. He loved the way he could improve peoples lives. The two years went too fast, but he is really looking forward to seeing his family. He would like to get a job in America and he is looking forward to driving his car again!
When he returns to America he hopes to apply for a few Scholarships and do Wilderness Emergency Medicine Training, to be ready to handle medical emergencies anywhere in the universe. Who knows … maybe if you get stuck in the wilderness, Kevin will be there to help you!
We will miss Kevin and Brad and all the things they’ve done! Thank you both and our best wishes.
