Speed Challenge 2011, what will it be?

It has started! Speed Challenge 2011 is a fact. It is in the Second Lagoon again, but they have dug a special channel for the Speed Challenge. It looks good and the expectations are high. Everyone hopes to get new (personal) records and the new channel will help them with it.

For the digging of the channel, the Second Lagoon has been really busy with a lot of workers from the 6th till the 10th of October. A lot of machinery was used for the excavation of the channel. Sophie Routaboul and Sebastian Cattelan, were there helping with anything they could along with many others. They got the ‘Enviro Clearance’ from the Ministry of Environment & Tourism so their dream to make a real channel for the Speed Challenge became a reality.

Now that there is a channel a full scale event for 2012 will be planned and a numerous international competitors will be invited. The organisation of every event has become more challenging and everyone is glad that the Speed Challenge will take place again.

The consequences of this recognised official record attempt are far reaching. This event combines an environmental aspect together with the efficiency of wind power, the human, tourism and commercial aspects. Not forgetting bringing to the front of the stage an African country: Namibia.

This is where kitesurfing (while still in its infancy), has been propelled into the headlines as being the world’s fastest craft on water.

The Speed Challenge is made possible by the sponsors: LM Wind Power, Genetrix and his Team, SunPass Cream, The agency Chaffron Insurance, Kitaddict and the Lüderitz Community.

We hope to see you at the lagoon until the 17th of November supporting the participants.
