COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER AT GALA DINNER

Over N$200,000 was raised at the Gala Dinner, held in the German Hall on Saturday the 12th of November. All of the contributions were made in support of the establishment of the Shelter House in Luderitz. The night was a very successful one, to say the least. Catering for over two hundred people! Donations were coming left, right and centre, from bed sheets and bibles to microwaves and T.V plates. An amazing N$120,000 was donated, which will be used to help pay for the salary of the caretaker who will be working at the Shelter House. A rugby jersey and mirror were auctioned off as another way of accumulating some income and we are overjoyed to know another large profit came from both items.

The Shelter house is a temporary building which will care for people in need. It is one of the Mayors bigger projects. For the past three years there has been an absence of social workers in town, this is a problem that has been recognised and is currently being dealt with. The land for the Shelter House has been donated by the council and now we must only wait for the line manager to give the go ahead. Hopefully the construction of the building should have begun by February next year.

The Christmas Party for elderly, orphans and vulnerable children took place on the 29-30th of November. The Mayoral Trust Fund was launched in 2001 by Founding Father of the Nambian Nation, Dr. Sam Nujoma. His aim was to assist the destitute, orphans and vulnerable children. So far the fund has been able to assist people in need of medical attentions within Namibia as well as in South Africa. Through funds raised for the Christmas party, 300 elderly and 500 orphans and vulnerable children will be benefited.

The funding support the community gave at the Gala Dinner was overwhelming. The board of Trustees of the Luderitz Mayoral Trust Fund hereby wish to thank all sponsors and individuals.

At the Mayoral Ball, the Nest Hotel had their big prize giving from the Rotary Polio Plus Raffle. This Raffle started in January and ended this month with the big prize. The Grand Prize went to: Johan Schoonbee who won two free nights in a Double Room at six prestige Hotels & Lodges in Namibia. In other words: 12 nights free Bed & Breakfast. Through the raffle they succeeded in raising some Club Funds as well as N$ 10,000.00 for the Rotary Polio Plus Fund. Unfortunately, there are a few new cases of Polio identified in the far North of Angola. But it will be under control soon.

Congratulations to Johan Schoonbee!
