In the last few years the Luderitz Community has lost quit a number of Buchters to cancer.
On 16 January 2011, Jurgen Schroeter, a well known figure in the Luderitz community, passed away after a cancer battle of 15 years. Not only was it a traumatic experience for his family but also for the Luderitz community and the Brighstart family. Brightstart however decided to try and take this negative experience and shine a positive light on it.
We decided to follow in the footsteps of our “Calendar Girl” sisters in England !
We started looking for 12 Buchter women willing to partake and found 66 volunteers ! What else were we expecting – when Buchters are asked to unite for a good cause, they always rise to the occasion. This was not only in tribute to Jurgen but to everyone that has been touched by cancer in whatever way.
Mr Jaco Herbst, a professional photographer from South Africa, agreed to take the photographs for free, as his family too had recently been touched by cancer. On the 26th May 2011 the first photograph was taken.
The calendars will be available as from Monday, 01 August from
Elize du Toit, from the Cancer Association – 20 4252
Brightstart Montessori School – 20 2588
San’s Fashions – 20 2814

As part of Rotary International’s pledge to match, dollar-for-dollar, a US$355 million challenge grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation over three years, the Rotary Club of Luderitz aims to raise N$ 20, 000.00 to help end polio worldwide.
Rotary, made polio eradication its top priority in 1985. As the volunteer arm and lead private sector contributor in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), Rotary has since contributed more than US$800 million, and its members have logged countless volunteer hours to help immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries.
Local Rotary Club President, Raymond Hummel’s views Rotary’s fundraising efforts as a way to fulfil the organization’s promise of a polio-free world. “Twenty years ago, we made a pledge to end this crippling and potentially fatal disease – once and for all. As we stand on the brink of victory, we will do everything within our power to fulfil this promise to the children of the world.”
Help eradicate polio worldwide now. For further information, visit www.rotary.org/endpolio
See next month’s edition of The Buchter News to find out the winners!

This Monthly Raffle is organised to help raise for the Rotary Polio Plus Program.

Monthly 390 tickets at N$ 10.00 will be sold and a monthly prize will be won. Each N$ 10.00 ticket is valid for the month in which it is sold. However, during the November Draw, a special Prize will be drawn, consisting of 12 night’s double accommodation (bed and breakfast) in 6 Prestine Namibian Accommodation Establishments. All tickets purchased throughout the year will be in that draw! So, the more tickets are purchased throughout the year, the greater are the chances of winning this Grand Prize!

The Valombola Crèche began in 2006 founded by Timoteous Egumbo an area 7 resident, with the aim of creating a place of safety for the young children of area 7 every weekday morning. The crèche was established in his home until 2007 when it moved to its current location at the Cosira Camp, the building is rented from the Town Council. Since then the Crèche has grown from 6 to 32 children and continues to expand. The children do pay school fees but the crèche is still seriously underfunded and lacks basic resources. The Valombola Crèche continues to grow and seeks support and assistance within the local community for these educational resources, and furniture for the interior of the building such as cupboards and shelving.
Project Trust Buchter volunteers have been working at the Valombola crèche since 2007 starting with Anne Ronson and Hannah Tankard. In keeping with this involvement, from the 9th to the 11th May nine Project Trust volunteers from all over Namibia including your resident Buchter girls, came together to paint the crèche. The inside walls were painted a sunny yellow with bright murals transforming the building. Colourful flowers border the white board, a cheerful Welcome Sign and the National Anthum amongst other imaginative designs, adorn the walls. Today this bright and sunny crèche is unrecognisable. The Crèche may not have a lot of resources, the children do not have a lot but they do at least walk into a welcoming and stimulating environment when they come to school each morning.
Thank you to all the volunteers who travelled to Luderitz to carry out these renovations and to the generous donor whose financial assistance made this project possible.•

A group of unemployed local inhabitants have decided to initiate a cleanup project of their own town. With support from the Karas Regional Council they will take the responsibility to clean the whole town at least twice a week.
The Regional Council will provide bags, gloves, face masks, gumboots, overalls and transport to a value of $3,611.00. The project will be led by Chairman Mr Isak Boois and Secretary Mr Paul Fredrick. The aim of the project is to safeguard the community from infection and disease caused by germs in the waste and the consequent unhygienic living conditions. Chairperson Mr Isak Boois hopes to create “a sustainable project to fight against health risks.” The project will mobilise unemployed youths in the hope of reducing unemployment rates and encourage the people of Aus to take responsibility for the cleanliness of their own town. Teaching residents to prevent health risks and strive towards self dependency and empowerment with Hope For Aus. •

The ECVC is becoming increasingly well-known in Luderitz and on 21st May, they decided to take 24 orphans from Area 7 and Benguela to do their own Beach Clean Up.

Picked up from the Regional Councillors office in the morning, the OVC’s, Pastor Tony, Dafa Makaula from the Catholic Aids Association, the new Peace Corp Volunteers Leah Fitch and Megan Froehle and Buchter Girl Jess Christiansen and two other Pastors set off to Agate Beach. The Eastern wind was blowing so it was a hot and humid day but the kids did their best to collect as much rubbish as possible. There were hot dogs and cool-drinks for everyone once they had each filled at least one bin liner with litter.

Aeroplane Bay was also chosen as another spot to clean up afterwards. There was a competition for who could collect the most rubbish and the winners were L.Popyeninawa, M.Kambinda, Q.Mungeli, N.Hamutenya and N.Nghimbwasha, so well done to those children. By the end of the morning they had picked up 73 bags of waste and both beach coastlines look much less polluted with broken bottles and carrier bags. As a community, we must thank them for choosing to help our environment. A big Thank You also goes out to the sponsors of the event: SPAR, Sea Breeze Coffee Shop and Seaflower. •

Two children burnt to death in an Area 7 house fire on Friday 22nd April. It is estimated that the fire occurred between 1.00am and 3.00am, whilst Marta Kondangwa was at work. Both children Helene Lluwanga Daniel, aged 9, and Levi Panduleni Shitlaleni, 9 months old, were asleep at the time. The fire brigade made all attempts possible to put the fire out but despite best efforts to the contrary, the fire destroyed the entire family home, Erf 247. The cause of the fire is not currently known.
A donation was made through the Karas Regional Council on the 15th May of $7732.28, to rebuild the Kondangwa’s destroyed home.

The donation provided sufficient funds to buy materials necessary, including zinc, cement and nails, purchased from Pupkewitz Megabuild. Condolences to the family for their loss.•
