Dear Buchters,

Well, it seems unreal to me but our year is up and this is the last edition of the Buchter News that Sarah and I will produce.
I’m happy to say that despite a few financial scares during the year the Buchter News will continue to be a part of Luderitz life. Two new volunteers will be arriving in September to write for the newspaper and I know you’ll all welcome them with the warmth you showed us.
August’s edition features news such as a visit from the Deputy Minister for Education (the first time Buchters have had the chance to speak about the Education System since Independence), a nationwide History competition held in our very own Youth Centre, stars on the rise in Brightstart Montessori’s Lower Elementary class and much more.
Our editor’s photos this month were taken next to the sign you pass as you leave Luderitz.
Goodbye to the Bucht and everyone in it that has made our year so unforgettable. Thank you for everything.

Until next time,

Dear Buchters,

June has been a very busy month in Luderitz. It’s been full of charity events, from OVC ceremonies to a Bike Rally, the annual Snoek Derby involved a lot of people from Luderitz and from out of town, and the FIFA world cup has started which has prompted frivolities everywhere as people support their favourite team. Not so positive events have also taken place though, namely the numerous thefts and robberies that have occurred which is dampening Buchters’ spirits considerably, we really hope whoever is responsible will be apprehended soon.
We have been busy attending all these events, as well as gradually preparing for our departure at the beginning of August. For a final project I am producing a play with the lower elementary class at Brightstart Montessori so rehearsals for that are also keeping me busy. Were really want to make the most out of our last month in Luderitz and form some even fonder memories than the ones we’ve already got!
Our editors pictures this month were taken during the Kratzplatz Run in Barrels.
Enjoy your July and the ever changing weather.

Our editor’s photos this month were taken on board the Zeepaard. Thanks again to Heiko for a fantastic trip, we enjoyed it so much.
The paper has had a very busy month what with festivities, concerts and a tragic murder. The Evangelical Baptist Church has been busy handing over clothes and food to OVCs as well as arranging for a Youth Worker to come and work with the children.
Next month promises to be just as packed what with the long anticipated Snoek Derby and Barrels’ Kratzplatz Run.
We hope you enjoy this month’s edition of The Buchter News.

Dear Buchters,
We hope everyone has had a nice month, accepting the time change and adjusting to the winter. We’re certainly starting to feel the cold again but at least we’ll be more used to the English and Irish weather when we go home.
It’s been a busy month for us news wise and personally, we spent a week with members of Brightstart’s upper elementary class at the field school in Aus which was great fun but tiring, and have had some days with up to five events to attend.
All our love to Jurgen and family, you’re in our thoughts.
Luderitz has and is welcoming many visitors and important people this month due to the annual Crayfish Festival, which incorporates events like the snoek derby, Miss Crayfish 2010 and the live music show.
Enjoy your month; we look forward to reporting on all the town’s thriving events.
Sarah and Hannah

I hope you’ve all had a great month, enjoyed Independence Weekend and didn’t fall for too many April Fool jokes.
This month our Editor’s photos are from Brightstart’s Fun Walk out to Diaz Point.
Stories from this month include the opening of Diaz Primary School’s bakery, Namdeb potentially re-opening Elizabeth Bay Mine and the art gallery at Kolmanskop opening.
This month we have received a number of anonymous letters to be published in the newspaper. We regret to inform those concerned that we can only publish information that people are willing to put their names to. Sincere apologies to the authors; you have our private support.
April promises to be an entertaining and exciting month with the long anticipated Crayfish Festival, Snoek Derby and Easter Weekend.

Dear Readers,
Welcome to our March edition of the Buchter News, which covers all of Luderitz’s February news and events. We hope you’ve had a good month, with the calmer weather (on occasions) and ze romantic atmosphere. It has been a quiet month in terms of groundbreaking journalism, but Luderitz has kept ticking over with the towns security and police meeting to discuss safety, prison inmates graduating Alpha courses, interschool sports days and local sports teams aiming high.
Our editor’s photos this month are taken at an extremely windy Diaz Point and during a tour around the progressing power station. Crispin and Benny Benn escorted Hannah around the power station, regaling her with stories from back in the day and pointing out interesting sites. Our desk officer from the UK generously took us to Diaz Point during his two day visit, so we could visit the historic site, as well as enabling us to see a bit more of Luderitz.
We hope you have a scintillating March and enjoy this month’s edition, we will be making the most out of St. Patrick’s on March 17th due to Hannah’s Irish heritage, and attending various functions such as the opening of Diaz Primary Schools bakery and the monthly P.P.R.C. meeting.
Bon appetit!
Sarah and Hannah x

Dear Readers,
We hope you’ve enjoyed your Christmas holidays and we’d like to wish you a very Happy NewYear! It seems strange that it’s 2010 already; we can both remember ringing in the new Millennium ten years ago. Our editor’s photos from this month were taken during our Christmas holiday – Sarah is about to bungee jump off the bridgebetween Zambia and Zimbabwe
at Victoria Falls- the photo still makes her stomach turn. I am standing at the Cape of Good Hope. We’ve had a wonderful time travelling around Namibia, Zambia and South Africa and getting to see a bit more of this country we call our home but we’re back now and we’re ready to get into the swing of things. January’s edition includes stories on the unfortunate amount of deaths that have occurred over Christmas, election updates, housing distribution and criminal’s sentences.
We hope you all enjoy February, with Valentine’s day, Shrove Tuesday and the start of the crayfish season to look forward to, it looks promising!
Until next month,
Hannah and Sarah. x

Welcome to our last edition of 2009! The last three months have flown by and we can’t believe it’s Christmas already. We both feel really at home here, due to everyone being so welcoming, and it definitely doesn’t feel like we deserve a holiday yet! From the 4th of December we will be travelling around Namibia, Zambia and South Africa until we return early January to prepare the next edition of the Buchter.
Our editor’s pictures this month are at the second lagoon where the Speed Challenge was held. It was a very windy day as you can tell from Hannah’s hair, but we had great fun cheering on the competitors and being blown over. Thanks to Monica and Manfred for giving us a lift there and back!
Goodbye to Paddy and Jacob who are leaving Luderitz for good, after living here as volunteers for the last two years. Thanks for showing us the sights and introducing us to people. Happy travelling Jacob and happy wedding Paddy! Good luck, we’ll miss you.
We have to say a special thank you to Crispin Clay for proof reading our articles for the last two months while Liz Swoboda has been away. Much appreciated Crispin!
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas, an excellent New Years Eve and a prosperous 2010. See you next year!

Dear Readers,
We hope you have all had a good month, and are preparing yourselves for the ever exciting Speed Challenge kite surfing competition.
We have decided to change our editors’ pictures; each month we will be in a different place in Luderitz, and maybe further afield depending on how adventurous we have been that month. This month Hannah is on the historical Shark Island, scrambling over the smooth rocks and relaxing on our day off. Sarah is on a farm in Aranos holding a meerkat.
After a lot of effort we managed to get out of Luderitz for a weekend this month, and hitch-hiked to Aranos to visit some friends of ours. I think our journey put us off hitch hiking for life. We’ve decided waiting on the sides of roads for hours is not for us. At least it enabled us to see a bit more of Nambia which is always welcome.
This month Luderitz is going to play host to some exciting events and we are thoroughly looking forward to all of them, starting with the Speed Challenge and Oktoberfest.
We wish you all a good November, and hope you all enjoy this issue. Any comments, queries or suggestions are always welcome.

Sarah and Hannah. •
