Back from holiday and we are sure glad to present the new Buchter News! This is the year we’re leaving, but still 6 editions to make, so no worries.

Hope you have all had a positive start to the new year!

This is the 250th edition of the Buchter News, what an honour to have that edition. This means that the Buchter News has been up and running for the past 25 years! In the beginning as a small photocopied paper and every year new improvements from new Buchter Editors. It has had it’s up’s and down’s but it doesn’t alter the fact that the Buchter News is still going. We are proud to produce the Buchter News and to know you are a “Buchter Girl” for the rest of your life.

We want to thank everyone who is or was involved in the production of the Buchter News and we are hoping for many more years!

This edition is full of Aids relatated events, a little bit of what went on aroundChristmas and we spoke to the Mayor and Reverend Scholtz about what to expect in 2012.

Of course February is also the month of Valentine’s day and we couldn’t let it pass quietly…

Don’t forget to e-mail us on info@buchternews.com for any suggestions.
For now as always read and enjoy!

Novembers month bears News of all kind from the Speed Challenge to the Mayoral Fund Ball. We have been covering some of the most recent Ceremonies and Celebrations in Luderitz. Not dismissing all the work that has gone into the Christmas Plays we have had this month.

As the year is coming to an end, our vacation has crept up on us quicker than we could have imagined. Due to our time away we unfortunately will have no January Issue, sorry Buchters!

Don’t fret we will be celebrating the 250th edition of our hot off the press Buchter News in February of 2012 for you to check out!

You can still reach us at info@buchternews.com so give us a shout if you want to put something in the Buchter News or if you have any recommendations.

Alex and Simone

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Dear Buchters,

Second month of having the Buchter News under our supervision! There was a lot going on in the month of October and we are happy to let you know all about it!

There were a lot of donations from the Regional Councilor. This is the first time in a couple of years Luderitz Speed Challenge is not the front page of the October edition. This is because the Speed Challenge just started, but of course we’ve got an update for you.

We had a special visitor in Luderitz: Erden Eruc. He is rowing the ocean in his rowing boat. You can read more about that on page 8.
We have enjoyed writing this issue and hope that you enjoy reading it as much as have liked making it.

There is always something for us to improve on, so if you’ve got a suggestion or want to contact us about placing articles and adverts, don’t hesitate to drop an e-mail at info@buchternews.com

Without further ado let’s read about what happened in this month’s new edition of the Buchter News.

Dear Buchters,
Let us introduce ourselves, as we are the new ‘Buchtergirls’!

Alexandra Fraser, born and bred Scottish lass. I’m seventeen years old and I have just finished High School. I’m a bit of a drama geek and I like art!

My name is Simone Visser and I’m the other Buchter girl. I lived in Holland, near Amsterdam and I have just finished High School as well. As a lot of you know, Dutch looks like Afrikaans, so watch out what you’re saying in Afrikaans. I can probably understand it.

The first three weeks of our time here has been really busy, finding out how to run the Buchter News and getting to know what’s going on in town. Thanks to the people who have welcomed us and helped us out so far! If you’ve got something interesting or exciting to tell, let us know! You can e-mail us at info@buchternews.com

This year like the years before, we are busy working at the Valombola Crèche and teaching at the pre-primary and Lower Elementary at Brightstart Montessori School. We will, of course, be publishing the Buchter News every month which we are really enthusiastic about!

This month the Lü-ka was an important festival and we loved taking part and writing about it. Sadly two Peace Corps volunteers left us all this month after two years of appreciated work in Luderitz. E-bay is going to be placed back on the map of diamond mines.

With lot’s going on please, sit back and enjoy yourself with our first issue of the Buchter News.

Simone and Alexandra

Dear, oh dear oh DEAR Buchters!
August ALREADY!
The month of departure is upon us, this year not for just one, or even two but THREE Buchter Girls!
Lindsay Shroeter leaves Luderitz after arriving as a Project Trust Buchter girl in 1986. Thank you Lindsay for all you have done for us over the last year and all you have done for Luderitz over the last 20 years. You will be very much missed. Turn to page 11 to read more.
On the 13th August two more Buchter Girls will be following in Lindsays footsteps. We bid you farewell as we head for distant shores and NOT so sunnier climbs. Next year it’s back to the books for the both of us, Jess will be studying Journalism at Preston University, and Emily will be reading History at Newcastle University. Thank you for making us feel so welcome over the last year and promise not to forget us TOO quickly!!
BUT you’re not rid of us and you can’t start forgetting us QUITE yet, you still have our LAST Buchter News to enjoy. And WHAT a LOT there is to enjoy in this months Buchter. You have in your hands a MIGHTILY crammed paper full of NEWS and OLDS and a HELLEVA lot inbetween!
OUT with the OLD and IN with the NEW. Not only do your Buchter Gals say goodbye on pages 12 and 13, but so do our grade 12 learners on page 4. Read about the Matric Farewell Ball and spend a night in LAS VEGAS.
There are some BUSY bees on page 5 and don’t forget those GLAMOROUS ladies on page 8.
PHEW whatalotta exciting things to read about this month! So Buchters reach for you reading glasses cos this months paper definitely requires a closer look and your UNDIVIDED attention. SO for now SIT BACK and from us your 2011 Buchter Girls So Long, Cheerio, Farewell and – Oh gosh we’re TEARING up – BON VOYAGE BUCHTERS!
Yours (till the 13th)
Emily and Jess

Goodness Me! Where on earth has this chilly weather come from?? We were under the impression we were in AFRICA?! These plummeting temps are reminding us NONE too fondly of the chilly English days of yore. Time for East Winds now please. THANKS! We’re looking forward to some lovely June evenings with warm desert breezes. THAT’S what you’re Buchter Girls signed up for when packing for SUNNY Africa! So if you see the sun tell him to start pulling his weight!
Well what a busy month we’ve all been having Buchters! (despite the absurd number of jumpers weighing us down…) The school holidays might mean a break for some, but Buchters you’ve certainly not been sitting around on your elbows twiddling your thumbs! (We should know we’re the ones who’ve been writing about all you’ve been getting up to!!) So THANKS for keeping our diary’s full and newspaper pages CRAMMED with up n’ comings, going ons, and been n’ dones. WHERE would we be with out you?? (Certainly news would be thin on the ground and the pages of our Humble Paper would be MIGHTY sparse!)
SO what’s been on the agenda this month?? Well wheels have been turning all the way from Aus with the cycle fun day, cast your eyes right to read allaboutit. The big event this month was of course the Crayfish Festival. It has however had mixed reviews, let us know what YOU thought about it and send us an email at:
info@buchternews.com.
SO Buchter’s take a minute out of your HECTIC schedules, put your feet up and have a flick through this months Buchter News!
Until next time!
Emily and Jess

MAYDAYMAYDAY – Yes this is a distress call, we’re running outta time!

MAY already?

Goodness me what MAYhem.. How absurd! Where on EARTH are all the months going?? HMMM?

Before you know it, it will be August and your Buchter Gals will be weepily waving goodbye. How TERRIBLE! If I MAY say so myself…
WELL cheerup, you’re not rid of us just yet, and there is ONE good thing to be gleaned from the passing of time.. yet another Brand NEW Shiny Month means a yet another Brand NEW Shiny Buchter Newspaper! MAYbe it’s time you thought of that hey?!
There’s PLENTY to be cheery about in this month’s paper. Buchters you certainly are a charitable lot, there have been fundraisers and donations all over the place, read allaboutit on page 9. There are some BEAUTIFUL Buchters not to be missed on page 4 and a SPLASH of news on page 5.
The BIG news story this month must certainly go to Namdeb. On diamonds we.. err are not building at the moment…. BUT fingers crossed they’ll be up n’ “building on diamonds” again soon!

So Buchters there’s no need to be distressed, if you feel a MAYDAY moment coming along (heaven forbid!) then simply sit back, put your feet up and crack open this month’s Buchter News (and MAYbe a bottle of wine whilst yer at it!)

Enjoy!

Are you feeling FOOLISH?! If you fell for the Radiation Rouse then you SHOULD BE!
Luderitz? In danger of RADIATION? All the way from JAPAN?? Honestly….
APRIL FOOLS! GOTCHA!!
So if you started stocking up on the sun cream to protect your thyroid from those TYRANNOUS iodine levels and tissues to blow the radon out of your nose then THINK AGAIN!!

Well there’s plenty to console yourself with, because this months Buchter is positively RADIATING news. BURY your shame and SHOWER your self with April’s goings on in the Bucht. Read about the REAL roots of Graffiti art in Luderitz on page 10. Luderitz played host to the very piratey looking Picton Castle which pitched up mid March and the youth of Luderitz have been CRACKING down on crime on page 11.

Enjoy April Luderitz, stay away from the spinach and if you do venture outside don’t forget your “large hat”. And don’t worry, we’re certainly not April FOOLING you, when we say this months Buchter is an absolute MUST read!

MARCH already?!
It seems only yesterday we were all merrily ringing in the New Year… Well we are certainly MARCHing through 2011!! With winter around the corner, your Buchter Girls have spent half a year in lovely Luderitz and are nearly 6 months old already – how time flies! To read more about the first half of our year flick to page 14 and 15, This month’s FROM THE BUCHTERS explores the elusive nature of time and the allure of diamonds.
The Buchters have had yet ANOTHER busy month, and true to form the Buchter News is crammed full with nothing you need to know but all you want to know. SO look no further! This month read about everything from Gangsters to Graffiti. The front page is FLOODED with news, and you can find out What’s CooKing on page 10. Read about what’s happening at The High School on page 6, and don’t forget to get your brain ticking with a spot of SUDOKU on the PUZZLE PAGE.
What more could you ask for from a humble volunteer-run-little-local paper?!
SO, STICK the kettle on, CRACK open your copy of The Buchter News and START with page one (it’s usually a good place to start…)

Until next time,

Well first let us start off by saying Happy New Year to you all. What a year 2010 was! We have had a really epic 6 weeks of travelling all over southern Africa; Botswana, Zambia and South Africa as well as exploring the very beautiful Namibia which we like to call home. We want to hear all your stories about what weird and wonderful things you did on New Years Eve and over the Christmas holiday so send them to the usual address of: PO Box 470, Luderitz. With no January edition of The Buchter News, this month’s newspaper is jam-packed with articles to keep you up to date with what has been happening.
Previous articles have inspired people to take part in helping the community. We have received donations from generous readers around the world which is always great! One particular reader has very kindly donated several amounts of money including N$1,000 to Monika Nekwaya to help her through university, N$2,000 to Pastor Tony to boost the effectiveness of the ECVC and also N$3,000 to Richard Hanse to enable him to get a new wheelchair which was done through Rotary. Other local people here in Luderitz – you know who you are – have also put money towards these charitable causes which we can assure you have gone to very good use. So thank you to those people – your support is very much appreciated.
Are you feeling in high spirits about the New Year? We sure are! We can feel the excitement of not knowing what 2011 is going to bring and we really do wish you all the best for it. So stick the kettle on, sit back and enjoy the first Buchter News of the year!
Jess & Emily.•
