Take 35 children, a lot of costumes and a script and you’ve got the Nativity play 2011. This year’s Christmas play took place on the 12th of October. The children all took their roles seriously; it was a big thing for them working hard on rehearsals to ensure they gave their best performance. The younger children sang a number of songs. For the boy’s who are moving to Lower Elementary next year, there was an extra play. They played Henny Penny, a play written by Joseph Jacobs about a chicken who believes that the sky is falling down and journeys to tell the king. The girls who are going to Lower Elementary did a very impressive creative dance wearing pink and black matching outfits and waving flags of different countries around the world.

Lower elementary and Upper elementary also entertained us. A week later on the 18th of November, it was their turn to perform. The play this year was: Snow White. They stuck with the original story but with a couple of twists, turns, modern phrases and songs. Everyone was involved with it and had been practicing hard for many weeks previously, which resulted in an outstanding final production.
The play exceeded all expectations and every performer and teacher should be proud.

Christmas was also a subject in the play. Even Father Christmas came around with all his animals to see Snow White. The Christmas songs were played and you can tell that everyone is excited and raring to go for Christmas.

As we now say goodbye to another school year there is no better way to close than with Brightstart’s Christmas shows.

Enjoy the vacation and on return let’s go for another year of education!

The annual Brightstarts’ Entrepreneurs Day, sponsored by Bank Windhoek for the last four years took place on the 1st of October 2011. This year there were 27 stands filled with a wide variety of treats to choose from. This year our Second Prize Winners Bendre and Adriaan Bothma made a profit of N$800 with their curry and rice stand. Jolien Els achieved First Place with her Cupcake Den. Giving ALL her scrumptious cakes a happy home, to many more than delighted stomachs, as well as receiving a N$600 profit. Last but not least third prize went to Karina Zavitaev en Eugene Thuynsma for their beautiful home-made sweets, artwork and birthday cards. Each child received a Diploma and CD from Bank Windhoek and younger participants received piggy-banks. The prizes for our top three winners bagged themselves a bank account with Bank Windhoek and some starting off cash, encouraging children to learn and save money.

Brightstart would like to thank all participants and especially a big thank you to Mr. Carl van Greunen and the Bank Windhoek team.

Mr Makaula has been the Principal of Lüderitz Secondary School since January of this year. Let’s start with some background information.

He was a student here in Lüderitz until grade eight and then went to Windhoek high school A. Shipena S. S. S. On his return to Lüderitz he started teaching at the High School in 1997. He dedicated his time and effort to the school and tells us it had always been his dream to be the Principal. Taking on such a role holds a lot of responsibility.

As the only Secondary School in Lüderitz it is the only place for children to go. It is hard to make big changes and the school can be said to be ‘overloaded’ as there simply are not enough facilities. The school was originally built for 250 learners and over the years has been extended again and again to accommodate 981 children.

With such a large number of children it leads to issues such as the ratio of teachers to students. Mr Makaula shows his sympathy, “I feel pity for the learners with problems.” The students with learning difficulties are unable to get the help they need as there isn’t a teacher trained specifically in Life Skills. Next year the Government plan to have full time Life Skills teachers for all schools in the Country. A teacher specializing in Life Skills, is not only a Full time Teacher but also someone whom children may speak to for guidance.

Mr Makaula explains the plans for a NEW Secondary School in the area. The pledge for this new school started in 2006!
Four months from now, January 2012 the Grade Eight Children will start fresh at the Old German Hostel. The new secondary school will not only provide the children with a choice but also open new jobs for the community and stimulate the culture of competition between schools, from Spelling Bee’s to Sports and Science competitions.

Mr Makaula believes in a disciplined learning environment which benefits the students as they are aware of what is expected from them. From the 29th of September 115 Grade Twelve students will begin to sit their National Exams and from the 3rd of October, 200 Grade Ten students will also start their Exams.

Mr Makaula the Principal, the management and the rest of the Staff at Lüderitz Secondary School would like to wish every student from Grade Ten and Grade Twelve all the best with their upcoming exams and have high hopes that they will receive good marks.

The Mayor also wishes all Grade Tens and Grade Twelves all the best with their exams. Good luck and that all students may receive good grades.

On the 22nd of September, there was a Career Fair at the German Hostel Hall. It was an information session for learners of Grade Ten and Grade Twelve. They have to decide what they want to study and what career they want to do.

The Mayor was there to support the learners in their choice. There were many career opportunities spoken about: a pharmacist, doctor, health inspector, nurse, technician, employment officer, social worker and a police officer were there to inform the learners. The main interest in career appeared to be money orientated career. However they were assured not everything in life is connected to money; it’s the experience that matters.

Good luck with your choice!

Ballerinas of all ages cast a spell over Luderitz on the 23rd July with the towns first ever major ballet concert – Sleeping Beauty.
Marietjie Bothma directed and choreographed the concert assisted by Santel Malan. Starring Macdeline Biewenga as Princess Aurora , Bendre Bothma as Prince Florimund and Linda Looser as the wicked fairy Carabosse. The story was spun of the Princess’s Christening and subsequent spindle curse cast by Carabosse. Leading up to the fateful 16th birthday the Princess, tricked by Carabosse pricks her finger and the
Kingdom falls asleep for 100 years. Awoken by Prince Florimund’s kiss, Princess Aurora’s sleeping spell is broken and the marriage is announced.
Macdeline Biewenga who started ballet in Grade one and is currently working towards her intermediate exams with Marietjie Bothma, captivated the audience with her incredible grace and skill on stage. The youngest students directed by Santel Malan attended the wedding as fairytale characters and charmed all those watching with their wonderful performance
Sleeping Beauty was the first major ballet concert ever to be performed in Luderitz and after such a successful evening Mareitjie hopes it will be “the first of many”. The Ballet School currently consists of 22 students from three years old upwards. Classes cover a range of abilities and open to all. Marietjie urges all those interested to contact her on:
Thanks must go to Marietjie and Santel for all their hard work and to all those who helped pull the evening together. A bewitching performance, what a fantastic success Luderitz!

The Matric Farewell Ball was held at the Turnhalle on 10th June 2011.
The entrance was packed with proud parents, young children and locals in the area all trying to catch a glimpse of the glamour. Inside, the theme of the night was ‘A Night In Las Vegas’ so the Turnhalle was decorated like the inside of a Casino; with red carpet, a small poker table, paintings all the way from Kalahari Sands Hotel and a disco ball to top off the atmosphere. The learners also fitted the part, with stunning dresses and flashy suits. Most of the girls had splashed out by going all the way to Windhoek for material for their dresses and buying stunning shoes. It was well worth the effort as they all looked beautiful on the evening.
The Headmaster of Nautilus High, Mr.Makaula, made an inspirational speech to his students. Quoting Jeremiah 18:18 many times he told them to “keep learning” as they would be going into an unknown world of independence. He also advised them of “good health and an open mind for their next step in life.” His wise words will remain with them for a long time.
The organising committee was made up of Mr. W April, Mrs. B Mukapuli and Mrs. M Nickel who did an excellent job of making the evening happen. 80 students in total attended the evening and 18 teachers were also there. The teachers stated that they all had high hopes for them and even with the gang violence this year they claimed there has been no disruption of exams and have high chances of succeeding. A DJ from Luderitz – Percy – played all the right tracks for whoever was on the dance floor, keeping everybody happy and the vibe good. Another local was the caterer from Nautilus who cooked up the terrific food that night including meats, seafood, vegetables, salads and trifle for dessert. This was dished up by four Grade 11 girls, all dressed in Vegas type short black dresses. They all looked glamorous but didn’t steal the show of the Grade 12’s.
The night was a very enjoyable and a successful one for all and won’t be forgotten by the learners in many years to come.
