Part of the training and preparation for the National and International Special Olympics took place on the 5th of November at the Stadium. Beginning at six in the morning and ending around 9.30am
This event focuses on individuals with intellectual disabilities, giving opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
The launching was preceded by a three day coaches training course and a practical mini-event facilitated by Mr. Charles Nyambe, Director of Sport and Programs at Special Olympics Africa. A total of 22 participants were trained in leadership, divisioning of athletes, and the planning of competition events.
This sub-program was officially launched by Regional Councillor Jan Scholtz. He opened the Certificate and Awards Ceremony, which took place later that day. Clr. Scholtz showed his support and delight in the event. He said that the certificates each athlete received were not simply for display, but for the action and performance achieved by each individual.
The Special Olympics Namibia, already has sub – programs in place in the Khomas, Erongo, Kavango, Hardap and Oshana regions and are now planning on introducing programmes to the communites in Omaheke and Caprivi soon.
We look forward to seeing more of the
Special Olympics in the New Year to come!

This month, to conclude our kiting season The Buchter News talks to Luderitz’s very own Stefan Metzger, holder of the Nnamibian Kite surfing speed record to find out about the highs and lows of being Namibia’s fastest Kite Surfer.

Stefan Metzger began his Kite surfing career at the age of 13 as a rescue man watching his father, Heiko Metzger learning to kite. Little did Stefan know that 7 years later he would no longer be an observer of Kite surfing, but a Record Holder.

The Luderitz Speed Challenge began in 2008 and Stefan was encouraged by Sebastian Cattelan and Fred Dussie to start competing in 2009, he explains how without Sebastian and Fred’s guidance he “never would have done it”. Stefan also extends his thanks to all his sponsors; “there are too many to mention individually, but thanks should be given to them all for making it possible for me to compete”. This year Stefan raced for the whole month, breaking the Nnamibian record previously held by Jugan Geieger in just the second week with 45.6 knots. Nnot easily satisfied, he broke his own record twice more, finishing on the last day of the competition with an impressive 49.28 knots. “I was pleasantly surprised by my third record, for 19 seconds the conditions on the channel were perfect for me, allowing me to reach speeds previously beyond my reach.”

The Speed Competition was very successful this year, almost every rider broke a personal record if not a national
one and the world record for men and women was smashed. Stefan attributes this success to “the event organisers for allowing the competition to run smoothly, but in particular to Sebastian Catalan” Sebastian was running the competition
as well as taking part and was responsible for the development of the Channel, allowing competitors to kite faster and for longer than ever before.

To become a record breaking kite surfer, Stefan stresses the importance of training; “riding alone for hours on end is fairly intense and can at times be boring, but it’s absolutely necessary to continually keep practicing”. However repetition alone is not enough. To be a record breaker you must have a certain drive to succeed:
“Never be satisfied with what you’ve got” advises Stefan, “I’m happy with my record this year but in 2011 I plan to break it again.”

Stefan has certainly set the bar high for himself, but with the support of the Buchter Community, the event
organisers and his sponsors, almost anything is possible. •

In sport the Desert Buffalos Sports Club unite to help the aged.

On Sunday 12th September the Desert Buffalos rugby club donated their winnings from a recent tournament to the Helping Hands Old Age home in Nautilus.
The Desert Buffalos Rugby team is one year old and was established in memory of Raymond Juan Dentlinger who died at the age of 19 last year. Raymond, known as Baliman to his friends and family, dreamt of making a difference to the local community. He wanted to help the vulnerable; starting with young people affected by drugs and violence living on the streets, yet he did not forget those also in need of aid but overlooked in old age.
Baliman believed that “in sport we unite” and that creating sports teams would open opportunities otherwise unavailable to those growing up embroiled in the spiralling problems of street life.
Last year Simone Dentlinger decided to make her son’s dream come true; with the help of her family she has captured Baliman’s unique philosophy of helping the old as well as the young. The Desert Buffalos is a non profit making club, all the proceeds of tournament winnings are donated to the Helping Hands Old Age Home in Nautilus. The Helping Hands Old Age home receives no government subsidies; it simply survives on sponsorship and donations from those such as the Desert Buffalos.

Through the hard work of the Dentlinger family, vast improvements have been made to the quality of life of both the old and young. The Dentlingers hope to expand the Desert Buffalos club to encompass more sports and to help more people. They will work together towards their goal in the belief that “teamwork is the only recipe for success”

An exciting rugby match between Rosh Pinah and Luderitz Ocean Swallows kicked off at 2.40pm on Saturday 22nd May at Luderitz sports stadium. Ocean Swallows seemed less prepared than Rosh Pinah before kickoff but it was soon obvious that the teams were well matched.
The game was fast paced which was no mean feat in the East weather, and Ocean Swallows did well to dominate in the scrums and line outs, but Rosh Pinah had some big forwards who repeatedly broke through Ocean Swallows defence. The Luderitz team did not however back down, even though Rosh Pinah was winning at this stage after scoring two well placed tries and one conversion straight through the middle of the posts. Ocean Swallows’ centre had a few good break throughs but without his team there to support him, he unfortunately didn’t score any points, until thirty minutes in when the centre finally made it over the oppositions try line. He also converted the try, bringing the score to 12-7 to Rosh Pinah at half time.
After a disheartening first half Ocean Swallows came back fighting after half time, unfortunately to no avail as Rosh Pinah scored three more tries. A lot of penalties were given away by both teams, mainly for all the injuries that occurred, one player from Rosh Pinah incurred a leg injury and two players from Ocean Swallows gained similar injuries.
The majority of the second half was spent with Swallows dominating in Rosh Pinah’s half but Rosh Pinah repeatedly had lucky, but well worked for break through runs which resulted in them scoring.
Luderitz rugby supporters gathered in the stadium and in their cars, well prepared for the hot day, beer and braai food was also available for the spectators, who were as ever enthusiastic about the game. Unfortunately this time Rosh Pinah came away with the victory but it was still an entertaining game and both teams worked hard.•

As I’m sure everyone in Luderitz is aware, the 2010 FIFA World Cup kicked of this month in South Africa. The world cup is the most widely viewed sporting event in the world, and although Namibia unfortunately didn’t qualify, Namibians all over the country seem to be supporting South Africa proudly.
On the opening day, Friday June 11th there was a small procession through town organised and sponsored by FNB, of children and local bank staff adorned in football shirts and face paints, waving flags and sounding vuvuzelas. Businesses in town have also got into the spirit, many bringing in large TVs especially for the matches; the Nest Hotel, the Oyster Bar and Stepps Inn are amongst a few that are showing all the games on wide screen TVs.
The police are also taking special precautions during this time to quell any trouble that might arise from overzealous fans.•
