As part of this process, the Centre’s Art Instructor, Chika Kirihara, had her students decorate the container last month in order to make it more appealing to the youth. The room itself was implemented due to the feeling that the Luderitz youth need a positive environment, as there are not enough safe spaces where they can relax, congregate. Thus, the donation of a DSTV package is quite important as it will be both entertaining and informative for the youth due to the educational programming it offers.

This company has been excellent at fulfilling its social responsibility and we hope other companies will share its desire to assist Namibia’s youth. The Luderitz Youth Centre calls on all of Luderitz’s youth to visit the Youth Room and take advantage of its resources when it opens in April.

The Buchters Women Charity Organisation has kicked off 2009 with several donations to elderly members of the local community.

The group is a recent initiative set up by Wienda Van Wyk in an attempt to give something back to her community and comprises of 33 members, all female. Each member donates N$100 to the charity each month and the accumulated money is then used to buy food and clothing for a vulnerable member of the Lüderitz community.

“Last month we were able to donate food to two of our elderly people” says an energetic Van Wyk, “we’re now collecting for Februarys donation and we’re also looking at doing a town clean up to get rid of all this litter that’s lying about”.

It is refreshing to see a group of this nature, particularly an all women group, forming within Lüderitz, keep up the good work.

By Padraic Gerety

On the 3rd of Decmber ’08 the American Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has made a large and very generous donation to Namibia’s OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children). The Church gave hundreds of boxes of bedding, clothing, shoes, hygiene kits, school kits, and blankets to the CAFO Head Office in Windhoek, which then distributed them all across the country. Luderitz received its share of these gifts when CAFO Head Office Driver, Mr. Bessinger, arrived in the afternoon of the 3rd with a bakkie full of these boxes of hope. There to receive the donation were several Luderitz OVC and members of the Luderitz CAFO Committee: Revd. J.A. Scholtz, Chairperson, and Sr. Bettie Wilskut, Volunteer.

The donation itself consisted of 2 boxes of clothing, 10 hygiene kits, 5 school kits, and 35 blankets. Revd. Scholtz stated that these supplies will make perfect Christmas gifts for Luderitz’s OVC and that the committee has now distributed all donations to excited youngsters. The boxes allowed Luderitz to get into the Christmas spirit by knowing that our community’s most vulnerable have been given special care.

This donation has not only raised our spirits and given hope to Luderitz’s OVC, but it has also demonstrated the commitment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and of CAFO to improving the lives of all OVC. This event has been highly motivating and encouraging for us, and thus we would like to extend our most sincere thanks to the Church and to the CAFO Head Office for the assistance provided.

In addition two wheelchairs have been donated: earlier this year a wheelchair was given to a Hansen boy, and now a second one has been donated to Mr. Van Tak.

Do not forget to test your luck and come to the draw of the annual raffle, which will be held early December. The raffle is intended to raise funds for the various projects in which Rotary engages it self.
